My twenty-five years of involvement with Golden Age Home were somewhat unique in that they included many years of service on the Board of Directors and a number of years as the son a GAH resident. In the former capacity, I was responsible for establishing policy and direction for the facility’s programs and assuring that those programs were effective in serving residents. In the latter capacity, I was able to see first-hand the results of those efforts from the perspective of my own mother. In both capacities, I found Golden Age Home to be a wonderful example of what a community-based program should be.

Our mom, Jamima Ward, was a resident of Golden Age Home Assisted Living for over 4 years when she was in her 90's. During this time, mom's needs were identified and resolved. She attended many functions, including daily exercise, games and craft classes. It was a Godsend that she could be transported to doctor appointments, often with accompanying staff. Enrolling your parent in assisted living is one of the toughest jobs of children. I can honestly say that mom absolutely loved the staff and, most importantly, she was content, which is hard for a senior who is away from home.

My mother, Lorraine Voigt, lived at Golden Age Home for several years before passing in 2018. She loved sitting in her arm chair where she had a glimpse of the hallway. That way she could wave to her friends as they passed by her room or stopped in to visit with her. Often times the staff would come around to the rooms in the evenings with a basket of snacks that residents could choose from. Whether she really wanted a snack, or not, mom would take one because she love that they stopped by. Mom loved to play bingo and other activities that Golden Age Home provided the residents. We, as family, welcomed that the facility included family in so many activities and events. I can truly say that my mother enjoyed living at Golden Age Home.

Before the Schulle girls came to the home, there were various other members of extend family residing there. All were pleased with their care. Some were on the waiting list for a while to get their place to live. Uncle Marvin Schulle moved into the GAH to be close to family. He was very satisfied to be among people that loved him whether actual family or adopted family, being staff and residents of GAH. So over several decades GAH has been a part of our family. We have all been grateful for the various experiences, care and love provided by all to all.
Ms. Ruby lived at Golden Age Home Assisted Living from 2011 until shortly before she passed away in 2017. Ms. Ruby worked as a LVN for 42 years; the last 9 years were in the Golden Age Home Nursing Home.
Ms. Ruby lived a hard life. She grew up in an abusive household. This upbringing led her to cherish others above herself and made her a very compassionate nurse. She was determined to do everything she could for her patients.
GAH takes care of the mundane and often tedious tasks that drain a person of their energy; housekeeping, cooking, laundry, medication management and more enabling residents like Ms. Ruby to enjoy her senior years all the while keeping her independence.
The Golden Age Home Assisted Living Center was the perfect fit for Dad. He did not want to leave his home, but definitely needed assistance with his daily living activities. He quickly developed positive relationships with the other residents and caring, professional staff and administrators. The staff treated him with respect, dignity, and became a second family. The staff members always went the extra mile to ensure quality care with the utmost patience. It was not just a job to them.
Golden Age Home provided my parents an environment where they felt loved, secure and appreciated. When we visited them from out of town, we got in on many of the activities and entertainment often led by people they knew from their church and the community. The staff did an excellent job at involving and challenging all the residents. Our parents always appeared to be well cared for by being clean, in appropriate clothing and well fed. We were able to leave Lockhart and go back to our homes content with our decision to make Golden Age Home our parents’ home.

To Golden Age Assisted Living,
We have come to appreciate the Golden Age Assisted Living. The constant care and concern that was shown for Betty’s mom and my dad was well beyond what anyone could expect. Both enjoyed their friends and their time at Golden Age. We witnessed your love and concern for them even after they left your facility and were facing the end of their lives. May God continue to bless you in the great work that you do.
Sincerely,
Bob and Betty Hailey
