Ms. Ruby lived at Golden Age Home Assisted Living from 2011 until shortly before she passed away in 2017. Ms. Ruby worked as a LVN for 42 years; the last 9 years were in the Golden Age Home Nursing Home.
Ms. Ruby lived a hard life. She grew up in an abusive household. This upbringing led her to cherish others above herself and made her a very compassionate nurse. She was determined to do everything she could for her patients.
Ms. Ruby, like many senior adults, became ill and then started having a hard time keeping her home in good order and taking care of herself. Her grown son lived with her for a while to help.
Ms. Ruby lived solely on her Social Security income and felt like she didn’t have any other options than to keep on struggling. When Golden Age Home became aware of the situation, staff stepped in and helped her move into the independent living apartments. At the time of her move Ms. Ruby was very ill and needed much attention. Because of the low-income program at Golden Age Home, Ms. Ruby was able to live in the independent wing. With proper attention to her health, hygiene, diet and emotional well-being, Ms. Ruby thrived both physically and socially.
GAH takes care of the mundane and often tedious tasks that drain a person of their energy; housekeeping, cooking, laundry, medication management and more enabling residents like Ms. Ruby to enjoy her senior years all the while keeping her independence. Several times a week, Ms. Ruby was able to use the CARTS bus to tend to her errands and medical appointments. Most days you found her working jigsaw puzzles, crocheting newborn hats for NICU or playing dominos. GAH was proud to be able to give back to Ms. Ruby for all the years of service she gave taking care of people. However, if the low-income program had not been existed, it is likely that Ms. Ruby may have died in her apartment due to lack of medical attention that she needed.
